Welcome to Balinakill Country House
Balinakill nestles on a hillside in seven acres of peaceful grounds on the west side of the Kintyre Peninsula in Argyll, easily accessible by air, boat or road. This impressive victorian country house retains a wealth of period features and is set in mature gardens on the edge of the village of Clachan, one of the oldest settlements in Kintyre.
Balinakill is rented on an exclusive use basis. The house has has twelve en-suite bedrooms, an additional children’s play/bedroom, three large public rooms – 2 with open fires and one with a piano and pool table, a fully equipped country kitchen, a victorian dining room with an open fire and a table to seat up to 24, and a cosy gunroom bar with a wood burning stove.
Your own private bar is left empty for you to stock and run yourselves. There are always at least a few guests who love the novelty of running their own bar! The bar is well equipped and you will find everything you need including ice buckets, cocktail shakers, a bar fridge and glass washer. There are pipes for kegs of real ale and draft beer so ale drinkers can pull their own pints and have their barrel of choice delivered prior to arrival.
I am a native of Argyll and Ian has been visiting the area since childhood. We both have strong family and friend connections here and despite extensive travel abroad it is still our favourite place in the world for it’s stunning land and seascapes and total escape from the rat race. We purchased Balinakill Hotel in 2007 after it came up for sale while we were looking for a (much smaller!) holiday cottage in the area. As we had stayed in the hotel some years before, Ian lost all interest in cottages and would look no further than the wonderful old victorian house he remembered. After purchase we rented the property back to the previous owners for a couple of years while we spent some time abroad and pondered what we were going to do with it!
The hotel closed in December 2009 and we started a period of refurbishment finally opening for business as Balinakill Country House in October 2010. The house has now been almost completely redecorated and furnished more in keeping with the victorian style. French doors have been installed on the gable end to create a new conservatory room, a new house kitchen has been installed in addition to the separate catering kitchen, the wee bar has been refurbished and we are now working hard to upgrade the garden and grounds.
Balinakill is a step back in time with an abundance of original features such as the oak panelled lounge and staircase, open fireplaces and grand public rooms with original cornicing. We have tried to compliment this with a few subtle modern conveniences such as a modern kitchen, wifi and Sky TV. However, this is predominantly a get away from it all destination situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The house is grand but warm and welcoming and we very much hope you will love and enjoy this wonderful old victorian country house , and being in Kintyre, as much as we do.
